On the occasion of the seventh centenary of the Translation of the Holy House, the Holy Father went to Loreto for the conclusion of the "Great Prayer for Italy", present with one hundred and thirty-three bishops and twelve cardinals in addition to the then president of the Republic Oscar Luigi Scalfaro.

In the Eucharistic celebration he beatified three witnesses of Catholic Action: Alberto Marvelli, Pina Suriano and Pedro Tarres y Claret. On this occasion the Holy Father paused in prayer in Montorso, in front of the image of the Virgin, transferred for the occasion from the Holy House.
